How Pressure Washing Tackles Algae

Algae are simple, non-flowering aquatic plants that came from a large group, including seaweeds. They thrive in a mix of moisture or water, with plenty of sunlight. Several factors contribute to the proliferation of algae.

Environments with high humidity and consistent moisture are particularly conducive to algae growth. Shaded areas that receive little direct sunlight are also prone to algae formation. So basically subtropical areas, like the environment of Kwa-Zulu Natal.

They spawn through spores that can travel in water, but also in the air, making it easy for it to spread from one environment to another.

Do I Need to Clean Algae?

Why is algae a problem? If you have algae growing near your pool or tiles then you could have safety issues with slips. The algae makes a slimy layer which is the equivalent of a banana peel in an old-fashioned cartoon.

But slipping isn’t the only risk associated with it. Algae maintain moisture on the surface it is growing on. This then leads to mould growth and the material potentially breaking down, such as rot on wood or rust on metal. Regular cleaning can prevent the need for expensive restoration work on surfaces damaged by algae.

Common Types of Algae

There are three common types of algae:

  • Green Algae: Often found on wood or shaded, damp wall surfaces.
  • Black Algae: More resistant, usually seen on concrete or stonework.
  • Blue-green Algae (Cyanobacteria): Can produce toxins, commonly found in standing water but also on damp surfaces.

Where Do They Grow?

Here are some typical areas where algae are often found:

  • Around Pools: Algae frequently grow around swimming pools, especially in areas where water splashes and accumulates. This includes pool decks, surrounding walkways, and nearby walls or fences.
  • Driveways and Parking Lots: These areas can develop algae, particularly in shaded regions or spots where water tends to pool.
  • Patios and Outdoor Seating Areas: Algae can grow on patio surfaces, especially in damp, shaded areas. This includes outdoor furniture that may remain moist and receive limited sunlight.
  • Decking: Wooden or composite decks are prone to algae, especially in shady, moist conditions.
  • Fountains and Water Features: Algae growth is common in and around fountains, ponds, and other water features due to the constant presence of water.

How to Clean Algae?

The cleaning method may vary depending on the surface material and the extent of the algae growth. For minor algae presence, a solution of warm water and mild detergent may suffice. For more stubborn algae, a mixture of bleach and water (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) is often effective.

For those concerned about using bleach or harsh chemicals, there are eco-friendly alternatives available, such as vinegar or baking soda solutions. Commercially available eco-friendly algae removers can also be an effective and environmentally responsible choice.

Can a Pressure Washer Clean Algae?

For larger or more stubborn algae infestations, pressure washing can be a more effective solution. When dealing with stubborn algae growth on various surfaces, many homeowners and maintenance professionals turn to pressure washing as an effective solution.

Pressure washers are highly effective in removing algae, moss, and other types of organic buildup. The high-pressure water stream penetrates and lifts the algae from the surface, making it easier to clean. Compared to manual scrubbing, pressure washing is much faster and requires less effort, making it ideal for larger areas or surfaces with extensive algae growth.
